Growing up digital

Hi First Fifteeners
Over the weekend one of my friends uploaded this photo onto Facebook. It's a picture of my friends and I on a Year 10 trip into Auckland City. I wonder if you can find me in the picture.

The students in this picture were a little bit older than you are now but not one of us owned a cellphone. They were too expensive for students to own back then.

We also didn't have computers at home and the school computers didn't connect to the internet. I was the first person in my class to get an internet connection but that wasn't until I was in Year 13!

Now the internet is common place and people use it to help their learning. But there are problems. Because most adults didn't grow up using the internet, our society hasn't developed many manners about what to say and do online.

So I have some questions for you to think, pair and share about. One person in your group needs to act as the recorder for each question which you will post as a comment when you are finished.
  1. What are some advantages to being able to use the internet to find and post information?
  2. Is all information available on the internet reliable? Should it be?
  3. What are some disadvantages to growing up in a world where teachers, students, parents and anyone can post anything about anyone at any time?
  4. What might people need to think about before you hit 'publish' on a comment, post or upload a photo or video?
  5. Can things people write or say online make a difference offline? How so?
Your comments will help our class develop a set of guidelines to help student bloggers make quality posts here in Room 15. Your answers will also be helping me when I go to a meeting on Thursday where I am helping to make online rules for teachers.

Week 8 @ TIS

This week was very busy. One of the highlights of the week was the Ugly Shakespare performance at our school. In order to prepare for the performance, our class's wacky words this week came from a famous Shakespare play Macbeth. We also watched a cartoon version of Hamlet. What did you think of the performance?

We've also been learning about the lives of children from around the world by looking at pictures from a photo project called Where Children Sleep. We all need somewhere to sleep and we all eventually grow up. What do you think photos said about the lives of children in them? What are some things that were the same in all the photos? What were some things that were different?

My learning win this week was getting all of your blogs set up. Our next learning step is developing quality posts for our blogs.

My First Attempt In Learning was the time-lapse video I took of a day in the life of Room 15. Time-lapse photography is where you film something at a very slow rate and then play it back at normal speed so it looks like everything is moving really fast. I thought it was interesting to capture our day in just 30 seconds but I think the video needs some improvement. What do you think I could I do differently next time?

What were some learning WINs and F.A.I.Ls for you?

Voice Thread

Hi First Fifteen
There's a Year 6 Class (New Zealand Year 7) class in Australia who are studying governance. They are looking for help with their inquiry from different countries.

Let's help them out with their voice thread.

Wow! What an assembly!

Hey Room 15
Just a quick note to say thanks so much for pulling together such an awesome assembly.

I know that at some point every student in our class made a contribution to assembly and I want to thank each of you for your dedication, energy and creativity in making the event a huge success.

My favourite part of assembly was the Te Tawa News segment. Perhaps we need to produce a regular news show about things going on around TIS and not just Pouakai and Room 15. What was your favourite part of assembly and do you think we need to start planning a regular news show?

I also think our Kindness Boomerang video was a big hit. We took our inspiration from a video that I found from another teacher on twitter. Which the school norms do you think this video represents and why? Do you think we should make another video at some point?

My WINs for assembly was ensuring every student made a contribution to assembly at some point. My First Attempt In Learning was forgetting to have the lyrics to the national anthem ready for everyone at assembly to read. Next time I am responsible for assembly, I need to make a check list of files I need before the event so I don't forget something important.

How was participating in this project for you? What did you do to help make our assembly a success?

What were some things you liked about our Pouakai Assembly?

What were some of our F.A.I.L.s? Make sure you give a solution to any F.A.I.Ls.

Please leave a comment remembering to use our quality commenting checklist.

Week 6 - Athletics Special!

Hi Room 15
Wow what a week! This term is just zooming by. I think the highlight of Week 6 would have to be Tawa Intermediate's Athletics Day.

It was fantastic to see so members of the First Fifteen wear Pouakai Pink to support our syndicate. Who do you think had the best costume? I quite liked Giorgi's fairy outfit but TJ from Room 15 had a pink P in his hair which was epic.

How did you athletics day go for you?

My learning WIN was supervising the discus throws. Having watched the rest of the school, I think the Pouakai strategy of using the hand, pie, throw worked pretty well. What do you think?

My First Attempt in Learning was almost getting clobbered by a wayward discus. I'm afraid to say the discus was thrown by a member of the First Fifteen who shall remain nameless.

Thanks so much to Shavee for being our wandering cameraman for the day. I really like the shot of you and Ethan togther What was your favourite event? Did you have any sporting WINS? What about some First Attempts In Learning at athletics day?

Morning Tea Tunes

Have a look at this video Stephanie took of Stephen playing the guitar with Miss Tito from room 13, along with some boys from Kapa Haka.
Great job learning the whole song in one lunchtime, Stephen!

Week 5 Learning Reflections

Hi Room 15

What another busy week here at Tawa Intermediate. How did it go for you? This week we've been reading about the Treaty of Waitangi.

One of our writing groups drafted and shot a movie trailer while most of our groups have been working on getting our paragraphs written about us. In Maths we've been working on tessellations and we've also been deciding on our metaphor for our learning statement.

For me the Wins of the Week have been the students who are really stepping up in class to take leadership roles without being asked. I've also been impressed with how many of you are using and finding wacky words to use.

I think our First Attempt In Learning would have to be Nucombe as we lost all our three games. We improved a lot in our last game when we used strategies like pairing stronger players with players who aren't so confident. What do you think we can learn from our losses for the next time we play inter-class sport?

How has your week been?
  • What have been some positives about your learning? Did you have any wins?
  • Have you had any challenges with your learning this week? Any First Attempts In Learning?
  • What about something unexpected?
Leave a comment remembering to use our quality commenting check list.

Creep Year our @feb29thdotnet blogging project

In a case of better late than never Helen, Lele and Sammiee present Room 15's blogging into leap year project, Creep Year, a movie trailer for their leap year movie.

What do you think of the team's year. How do you think they've captured the day being leap year? For the girls involved what were some challenges of making a trailer? What would you do differently next time?
