Our afternoon in the sun...

Room 15 took advantage of the amazing Wellington weather and enjoyed an afternoon outside. First we took our books in to the Dell and enjoyed reading our books with an ice block. However we paid for our indulgence by enduring the epic 12 minute run.

You need to watch out for Miss C in Room 13 who like to use water as 'encouragement.'

Athletics Day

Tawa Intermediate was blessed with fabulous weather for our annual athletics day extravaganza. Room 15 proudly donned our blue Huia colours and represented our syndicate with pride.

What was your favourite event?

Setting behaviour norms

Tawa Intermediate's student treaty has five key norms. caring, honesty, fairness, protection and care. These five behaviours help students to do the right thing.

As part of setting up behaviours, students completed a futures wheel where they thought about how not following the school norms in class might effect our school and our community.

The activity helped students think a bit more about how their actions have an impact on others.

Your something awesome...

Last week the Kid president challenged us to think about how we could make the world more awesome.

What do you think?
What could you do to make the world more awesome?

Blogger of the Week

UntitledCongratulations to Usha our blogger of the week (best blog post in the previous week). Her post on Visual Mihi made a positive connection with the reader, had an accurate title, a photo and is labelled.

I also like that Usha went and had someone proofread her post before she published it.

Please go to Usha's blog and leave her a quality comment.

Our Trip to Tawa Library

Due to the building upgrade, our school library is out of action until Term 2. However we are lucky that our school is within walking distance of the Tawa Library.

Room 15 was blessed with some glorious weather to stroll down to the Tawa Library to find out more about the services operated by the library and how they could get books out.

Before we went on the trip, we had a 'speed dating' session where we talked with our classmates about why they should 'date' the book we've been reading.

Speed dating is a great way to find out a bit about what other people are reading and also help us make connections between with what we have been reading.

At the library we found out more about what the library has to offer, how to request books also some digital resources.

For out of zone students, it is free to join the Wellington City Library system. The students just need to fill out the form and have a parent or guardian come in with a bill with the students' address on it to join the library.

What did you enjoy about visiting the library?

Home Learning - Dear Photograph

Our Huia Home Learning Tasks can be found here.

Dear Photograph

This online project (http://dearphotograph.com) gives students the chance to showcase a favourite or meaningful moment captured on film and taking a picture of the picture in (ideally) the same spot as the original photo was taken then writing a short letter about why the memory was chosen.

Your job is to choose a favourite snapshot and try to take a picture the photo in same spot. Don’t worry if your photo was taken overseas or the place has changed. You could take the photo of you holding the photo if you can’t go back to the original place. You also need to write a paragraph (at least three sentences) explaining why you chose that memory.

Please submit your homework via flickr (our photosharing site). Please email your photo to mash43pose@photos.flickr.com as an attachment. Put your name in the subject line and then type your paragraph into the email. Make sure you have permission of other people in your image.   Talk to your teacher early on if you do not have access to a device to take digital photos (a camera phone would do) or if you can’t email your photo.

Look at the two examples of 'Dear Photographs' to get an idea of the project.

Dear Photograph

This is my little sister and I on her first day of school. She was so excited to wear her uniform for the first time but I was a bit nervous about being in a new class and having a new teacher. Many years later, I still feel a bit nervous on the first day of school.

Dear Photograph
I still remember how much fun it was to have my cousin visit me in Wellington during the school holidays. We ran up down stopping at the Bucket Fountain to splash each other. Cuba street might have changed a lot in 20 years but I still like hanging out with my cousin during school holidays.

It's time for a pep talk

Hi Room 15

I can't believe we are already at the end of the second week. I hope you are all enjoying your time at TIS and have made some new friends. I thought this would be a fantastic time for a pep talk which I saw online last week.

What do you think kid president's key message is?

Do you think the video might have been different if an adult was speaking how so?

What are you going to do to make the world more awesome?

Have you had any challenges in the last two weeks? How have you overcome them?

Our Visual Mihi

UntitledFor the last few days Room has been working on Visual Mihi. First we thought about where we came from, then our family and friends, then our hobbies and then our name.

We then drew a brief sketch of some ideas before going onto to the final product.

What do the picture in your Mihi represent?

Why did you choose the pictures you chose?

What would you do the same or differently next time?

What subject do you think we were learning about using in our Mihi?

The great marshmallow challenge

Because the weather outside was, cold and wet Room 15 took their team-building inside with the great marshmallow challenge.

In groups of 3 students were challenged to build a structure out of 4 marshmallows and 8 mini skewers.

Week 2

The winning team was Jono, Helen and Tom who managed to make a structure of 25cm. Awesome work!

Week 2

What skills did use during the Marshmallow challenge?

What are some things you would change if we did the challenge?

First Week of 2013!

Congratulations room 15 for making it to the end of your first week at TIS. I had fun getting to know you.  My highlight of the week was the hoop challenge. We almost got to 4 hoops. What was you highlight?

Have you had any lollypop moments?

How would you rate your week?
