Growing up digital

Hi First Fifteeners
Over the weekend one of my friends uploaded this photo onto Facebook. It's a picture of my friends and I on a Year 10 trip into Auckland City. I wonder if you can find me in the picture.

The students in this picture were a little bit older than you are now but not one of us owned a cellphone. They were too expensive for students to own back then.

We also didn't have computers at home and the school computers didn't connect to the internet. I was the first person in my class to get an internet connection but that wasn't until I was in Year 13!

Now the internet is common place and people use it to help their learning. But there are problems. Because most adults didn't grow up using the internet, our society hasn't developed many manners about what to say and do online.

So I have some questions for you to think, pair and share about. One person in your group needs to act as the recorder for each question which you will post as a comment when you are finished.
  1. What are some advantages to being able to use the internet to find and post information?
  2. Is all information available on the internet reliable? Should it be?
  3. What are some disadvantages to growing up in a world where teachers, students, parents and anyone can post anything about anyone at any time?
  4. What might people need to think about before you hit 'publish' on a comment, post or upload a photo or video?
  5. Can things people write or say online make a difference offline? How so?
Your comments will help our class develop a set of guidelines to help student bloggers make quality posts here in Room 15. Your answers will also be helping me when I go to a meeting on Thursday where I am helping to make online rules for teachers.

I like how you have organized your thoughts into concise points. Do you think that people other than celebrities might want privacy? What about students?

  3. Hi Stephanie.
What are some advantages to being able to use the internet to find and post information?

You can learn faster in the internet rather than going to the library and finding a book and reaging the book. you can just type something and read the information.

Is all information available on the internet reliable? Should it be?

Not all sources are true, like wikipedia, and it should be, it's like lying.

What are some disadvantages to growing up in a world where teachers, students, parents and anyone can post anything about anyone at any time?

Kids can type bad stuff on other blogs and other websites.

What might people need to think about before you hit 'publish' on a comment, post or upload a photo or video?

Correct spelling and grammar, opening and a closing, if it's good or bad and permission from the people in it.

Can things people write or say online make a difference offline? How so?

Yes because if we say something bad about Lenovos and someone searchs that on google and they see what we said they'll remember what we said.

These are our answers. What do you think about advertisements.

    1. Hi Shavee and Group 6
You are right that you can learn a lot faster these days and I'm glad you've also thought about getting permission from people you post about it.

I think advertisements on the internet can sometimes be a problem especially when I have to wait to see things I want to.

What made you ask about advertisements?

  5. Hello Room 15,

Not all the information you find on the internet is reliable.
Some pages could have dangerous viruses and can endanger your computer.

Most of the questions you find on the internet should be safe if you have anti-virus, but be careful.

    Sincerely Logan and Nikki

Thanks so much for organizing your thoughts so well. You are right that people in Eygpt used the internet to help them organize a revolution. Closer to home, do you think that what you say and do online can make a difference offline?

  7. Hi Stephanie,

    1.
Between us all in group one, we think that the advantages we have by using the internet to rsearch certian topics is... The quick, easy, and very helpful result we receve.

    2.
Well to be honest the information isn't always reliable, but or certain reasons it shouldn't always be reliable like saftey reasons.

    3.
Well a major disadvantage is if someone, family related, publishes all your personal information online it could open doors for stalkers and preditors, or it just embaresses you.

    4.
Before any one hits publish, they should really think... Does it have any personal details?, Will it hurt or affect someone in any way?.
If it does, you might want to think twice before you nit publish.

    5.
Yes it could, for egsample, you might not like a certain part of writting nd you might quote oh that was just rubish, and that will affect the authors amount of viewers.

    Thats all for now

    sincerly yours,

  8. Hi room 15,

The advantages of having the internet for your learning is pretty much extraordinary, I mean you get to use the net and learn what other people have learned and there to teach other people of their knowing.

Well not all of the posts in the internet are true or reliable but most are true if you go to official websites like ehow.com and other good ones.

The disadvantages of having internet acess is the privacy people will just get private stuff about other people and post it on the internet e.x. (facebook).

People will think about if their breaching other peoples privacy if it is appropriate for other people.

The posts in the internet can affect people offline because it might hurt their feelings expose private lives etc.

Before I leave I want to ask you a question,
what wil be your repnse about all this internet nonsense.

    Sincerely Stephen

    3. Anyone would be able to do everything what they wanted to do.

    4. Before you hit publish you should always proof read you comment.

    5. It wouldn't make a difference unless you want to tell a funny joke through a text message.

    Yours sincerely Logan and Nikki
